Old MacKenzie Pass Open to Bikers
Bike Routes & Trails, Central & East Oregon, Mark your calendar, Willamette Valley — By admin on May 20, 2012 5:09 pmAn early season treat for a few short weeks!
The hard-working plow drivers have been at it again on the Old McKenzie pass (aka Hwy 242) clearing one lane starting from Sisters going east into the Willamette National Forest – about 30 miles one way. ODoT expects to have that one lane open to bikers and hikers this week, leaving that beloved window of time before motorized vehicles are allowed through.
Once the road is open to car traffic, biking along the winding, shoulder-less pass becomes a treacherous endeavor, so now is the time to wake up those winter legs with a nice long uphill climb and to take in the Cascadian vistas of Jefferson and Washington’s snowy peaks, rising out of the lava fields. Bring a warm layer, as no doubt walls of snow will rise along either side of the road, and the descent can be numbingly chill.
