Nordic Shelters under the Full Moon (Bend)
Central & East Oregon, Featured, Snow Sports — By admin on January 2, 2012 8:41 pmNot everyone wants to stay home on a winter’s snowy evening. It is
surprising how many people you will find at the sno-parks just outside
of Bend. Especially, around the full moon skiers and snowshoers wear
headlamps and take off to meet at one of the park shelters. The
three-sided rustic shelters have wood burning stoves and benches. The
forest lit up by the moon is truly spectacular and something that
should be experienced at least once every winter. Dress warm, carry
your ten essentials and most importantly bring gourmet snacks and hot
drinks to share. Also don’t forget your Sno-park Pass. They can be
purchased at local sporting good stores or the DMV. The two most
popular sno-parks closest to Bend are Virginia Meissner and Swampy
Lakes. They have three shelters that can be reached within 1-2 miles
and have a gentle grade. To find the parks, head west out of Bend on
Century Drive for about 15 miles and watch for the signs on the right
side. Maps are provided and the trails are well marked with blue
diamonds on the trees.
