Because I use my bike as a primary means of transportation, I can tell you with great conviction what kind of food is in season in the area. Right now, my favorite of all fruits – figs! – are at their peak. Problem is, I don’t have a fig tree and buying them at the grocery, these little honey-flavored treats can get pretty spendy. My solution? Urban Foraging. That’s right, picking the fruit from trees I see along my regular bike route. Before you get concerned that I’m stealing from the neighbors, know that I always pick from trees that I can see are overgrown with fruit, and I get permission from the property owner. I’m not alone in discovering this truest form of ”eat local”. In fact, a whole community of folks who partake in neighborhood picking have made this adventure even easier. Take a look at Urban Edibles and City Fruit: two great websites completely devoted to mapping fruit bearing trees and shrubs in the Portland area.
