Steins Pillar base

Hikers, climbers, photographers, and fans of geological oddities share a common affection for this destination. Tucked into the southwest edge of the Ochoco National Forest, the hike out to Stein’s Pillar is a fairly easy out-and-back route, about four miles round-trip. It’s a perfect early-season trail to ease back into warm-weather activities, break in a new pair of hiking shoes, or take in the brief wildflower season before the summer heat shrivels away the blossoms.

To find the trailhead, go east out of Prineville nine miles on Hwy 26, just past the Ochoco Reservoir. Turn left on Mill Creek Rd; after the pavement turns to gravel, and watch for signs to the Stein’s Pillar trailhead–it’s hard to miss. The trail takes hikers right to the base of the 350 foot pillar, where a rock overhang makes for a lovely lunch spot.  The view looks out over the Mill Creek Wilderness, which is surprisingly lush for the High Desert. Just below the pillar, a stretch of private land follows Mill Creek, but most of what you’ll see is public land–full of rock walls, boulders, and old growth forest to explore.
