Afternoon Adventures in China (Portland
Food & Drink, Northwest Oregon — By admin on December 26, 2010 4:20 pm
The serenity of the Classical Chinese Garden in the Old Town neighborhood gives urbanites a welcome respite. Built by trades people from Suzhou, Portland’s Chinese Sister City, the grounds and structures use traditional Chinese materials and fauna to create an exotic Asian oasis that provides a breathtaking experience regardless of season. Details are plentiful – intricate stone work wanders through the grounds and the delicate, detailed landscaping creates a welcoming sanctuary. It’s commonplace to see guests reading, drawing or praticing Tai Chi Staff, so make plans to partake in your own meditative practice. Be sure to allow enough time to enjoy the Teahouse and ask for your tea in the Gaiwan cup. Staff are knowledgeable and eager to show guests how to enjoy this traditional style of drinking. Traditional savory snacks include a daikon radish salad, tea-steep boiled eggs and turnip cakes. For sweets, try the moon cakes or almond cookies.
