Misery Ridge (Terrebonne)

Misery Ridge is a misnomer, because this trail in Smith Rock State Park makes for a great experience. It’s true that the ascent is steep and the drop-offs even steeper, so lots of hikers like to bring poles. Aerobic-ly gifted hikers can hoof it up to the Monkey Face viewpoint in under 20 minutes; the rest of us can catch our breath while enjoying scenes of rocky spires and ultra-fit climbers working their way up craggy rock faces. If you continue past the upper viewpoint, the trail winds its way down to the river, where the banks are lined with red dogwoods and yellow willows. The two miles or so back to the trailhead are easy and rolling, with lots of great spots to linger. For post-hike re-feuling, try the historic Terrebonne Depot just up the road toward Hwy 97.
