Art off the Beaten Path (Bend)
Bike Routes & Trails, Central & East Oregon — By admin on November 4, 2009 5:18 pm
Bend is known for it’s roundabout art: the flaming phoenix, the plow horse, the abstract compass. And yet some of the most interesting sculptures in Bend can’t be seen by car. Just a few miles out of Phil’s Trailhead, anonymous artists have created and installed works of art that surprise and delight riders who come across them. The first is a veritable landmark: the mini-phoenix roundabout (newly sporting a dalmation look, thanks to some spray-paint artists with questionable taste!) More hidden and off the trail, not far out of Phil’s Canyon, is the larger than life bike of all bikes. Once you spot it, you’ve got to stop for a moment to admire the ingenuity and craftsmanship! Any readers with insights on the stories behind these sculptures, please share!
