Surf’s Up at Billy Chinook (Culver)
Central & East Oregon, Water Sports — By admin on September 2, 2009 6:02 pm
Below the protective canyon walls of the Cove Palisades, where the Deschutes, Metolius and Crooked rivers converge, the water stays welcoming through September for wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing. From Hwy 97, follow the well-marked signs through the small town of Culver to the Cove Palisades, to find the easiest public boat landing at the base of the first canyon road on the Crooked River arm. Just upriver you’ll find a slalom waterski course, or head south to work your way around and up into the Deschutes or Metolius arms. There is plenty of room for weekend boaters seeking to extend the season, and even in choppy water the surfing is sweet! Watch the cliffs for eagles, osprey, and the mysterious collared billy goat; and just in case, gas is available at the Three Rivers Marina on the far Metolius arm.
